What is ski touring?

If you go ski touring, you walk up the mountain on skis with climbing skins. That way you reach places you can't get to by lift. Breathtaking couloirs and pristine powder fields.

Ski touring equipment

Are you looking for ski touring equipment? Consider in advance what type of ski tourer you are.

  • Lightweight tour: when you're aiming for multi-day trips and/or tours with extreme amounts of vertical gain.
  • Allround: for those who want to ski tour all season, regardless of conditions.
  • Freetour: for those who skin up for the perfect powder descent.

Lightweight tour

Are you aiming for lots of vertical metres and multi-day hut tours? Then you'll want a lightweight ski touring setup focused on the ascent. Choosing a light setup costs you less energy on the way up. You do, however, sacrifice some downhill performance.

Equipment suited to a lightweight tour:

  • Most lightweight touring skis (80-95 mm waist)
  • Lightweight tech touring bindings with leash
  • Lightweight touring boots

Allround

Want something lightweight but with a bit more comfort and downhill performance? Allround is for ski tourers who are out all season and encounter all kinds of conditions. Although slightly heavier than a lightweight setup, this kit is still light enough to rack up plenty of vertical metres. The skis and boots are a bit stiffer and offer better performance on descents.

Equipment suited to an allround tour:

  • Light touring skis from 1300 grams (90-100 mm waist)
  • Tech touring bindings with brakes
  • Touring or freetouring boots

Freetour

These are touring skis or lightweight freeride skis with a greater focus on downhill performance. The skis still climb well, but the emphasis is less on efficiency when ascending.

Equipment suited to a freeride tour:

  • Touring skis from 1500 grams or lightweight freeride skis (100-110 mm)
  • Downhill-oriented tech binding or hybrid bindings
  • Freetouring or freeride boots with tech inserts
