Approach skis

Are you looking for a way to avoid sinking into deep powder when getting to that one run? Approach skis are aids for freeride snowboarders to reach the terrain where you can lay down the first fresh tracks in the powder.

What are approach skis?

Approach or Ascent skis look like very short touring skis but for snowboard boots. They are climbing aids for snowboarders to reach terrain you wouldn’t get to without touring skis or a splitboard. The ascent skis are small and lightweight, so you can easily carry them and attach them to a backpack.

Who are approach skis for

Approach skis are for freeride snowboarders who want to get to that one run. You strap your snowboard to your backback, step into the ascent skis and walk over the snow to reach a powder run. The ascent skis are wide enough to walk on top of the snow where your snowboard boots would otherwise sink deep.

Advantages of approach skis

  • More affordable than a complete splitboard setup
  • Switching from touring to riding and back is faster than with a splitboard
  • Easy to manoeuvre thanks to their short length
  • Their design is entirely focused on uphill performance
  • Fits in a skin track
  • Allows you to ride your preferred snowboard in the backcountry

However, with ascent skis you'll reach their limit sooner than with a splitboard. Because of the width, edge grip is more difficult, you'll notice this on steep, icy terrain and when making traverses. Also, you always carry the ascent skis with you while riding.
