What to consider when buying splitboard skins?

If you're going splitboarding, you'll need climbing skins. During the ascent the skins provide grip, preventing you from sliding back down the mountain. We offer different types of splitboard skins. Before you buy splitboard skins it's important to consider which type of skin you want:

  • Glued or self-adhesive skins
  • Material: nylon, mohair or mixed

Glued or self-adhesive skins

At cold temperatures glued skins offer the best adhesion. Glued skins are durable but require maintenance. Self-adhesive skins are easier to use and are also simple to clean. Perfect for those who frequently go out and value convenience. If you store self-adhesive skins for a longer period it's important to use a protective foil.

Nylon, mohair or mixed?

The pile of the skins is made from nylon, mohair or a combination of both. The material affects grip, glide and durability:

  • Nylon: high grip, abrasion-resistant, water-resistant and durable
  • Mohair: low friction for good glide and plenty of grip on drier snow
  • Mixed: combination of nylon and mohair for wear-resistant skins, offering high grip and good glide

Pre-cut skins or trim-to-fit skins

When buying splitboard skins, make sure they fit your splitboard. There are ready-made skins, also called ‘pre-cut’; these skins match a specific splitboard model and length. There are also universal splitboard skins, known as ‘trim-to-fit’; these are sold by length and you need to trim them yourself. You will always receive a handy tool with your purchase for this.
