Midlayer as an intermediate layer for insulation
Basically, a midlayer is intended as an additional insulating layer under a (hardshell) outer layer. The insulating ability of the midlayer determines how warm you feel. A good midlayer wicks moisture away, keeping you comfortably dry and warm, even when you start to sweat.
Midlayer as an outer layer
Still, a midlayer is much more than just an insulating layer. You use a midlayer to add warmth, but in dry weather it can also be a great outer layer. Which midlayer suits you depends on what you prefer and what you intend to do. Choose from:
