What volume do I need in a backpack?

Working out how big a backpack should be is always a challenge. What, for example, is 40 litres and what can you take in it? A handy tip is to pack everything you want to take on your trip together. Put it in a backpack whose litre capacity you know or can find. Then estimate how much space you are short of or have left over.
