Avalanche airbags

Avalanche airbags, also known as avalanche backpacks, increase your chances of survival if you are caught in an avalanche. Discover our large collection of reliable avalanche airbags from top brands such as Ortovox, Mammut and Arva. Suitable for anyone venturing into avalanche-prone terrain, such as freeriders, ski tourers and splitboarders.

What is an avalanche airbag?

An avalanche airbag, also known as an avalanche backpack, gives you a greater chance of ending up on top of an avalanche. This significantly increases your chances of survival in an avalanche situation. We therefore always recommend wearing an avalanche airbag when going off-piste.

Note: an avalanche airbag never replaces the need for an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe.

How does an avalanche airbag work?

In an avalanche you activate the airbag with a pull. The airbag then inflates like a balloon. By increasing your volume you have a better chance of staying on top of the avalanche and ending up on the surface.

What to consider when buying an avalanche backpack?

If you're going to buy an avalanche backpack, it's important to decide in advance what you'll be doing. Based on your purpose you then choose the right size and type of system.

Size of the backpack

  • 15 to 20 litres: if you only take the essentials. You'll have enough room for a probe, shovel, vest and some food.
  • 25 to 30 litres: the most common size for a day of ski touring with a bit more space for skins, crampons and an extra midlayer.
  • 30 to 40 litres: for multi-day hut trips. For when you really need some extra space.

Mechanical or electric avalanche airbag

There are different avalanche airbag systems on the market. There are mechanical and electric avalanche backpacks, and airbags that run on supercapacitors. Below are the main advantages of each system.

Why a mechanical avalanche airbag?

  • Lightest systems
  • Simple to use
  • Relatively affordable

Why an electric avalanche airbag?

  • Can be activated multiple times on a single battery charge
  • Easier to take on a plane
  • Rechargeable and infinitely testable

Avalanche airbag with supercapacitors

  • Lightweight system
  • Easy to take on a plane
  • Quick to recharge and infinitely testable

Practise with your avalanche airbag

Have you bought an avalanche airbag? Make sure you're familiar with the system by practising pulling the airbag. If you end up in an avalanche the movement must be a reflex.

What should be in your avalanche backpack?

When you go off-piste you should always take an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel in addition to an avalanche airbag. Every avalanche backpack has a separate compartment with space for the probe and shovel.
