Explanation of the three-layer system

If you're out in ‘the middle of nowhere’ it’s important to be prepared for all weather conditions. Especially when it comes to clothing. To keep warm and dry during active outdoor sports such as hiking, skiing, ski touring, snowboarding and splitboarding, we recommend using the three-layer system. A base of three layers of technical clothing:

• Thermal base layer
• Midlayer
• Hardshell

Thermal base layer

It starts with a base layer of thermal underwear worn directly against your skin. Good thermal clothing provides warmth, moisture management and comfort. For it to work properly the thermal layer should fit snugly against your skin with an ergonomic or slim fit.

Midlayers

A midlayer is the insulating layer that provides extra warmth. This can be a fleece, jacket, bodywarmer, pullover or pants. What you choose depends on what you're doing and your personal preference. The midlayer provides warmth, so when buying think about what you'll be doing and how much warmth you expect to need.

Hardshell jackets and trousers

Hardshell jackets and trousers protect you from the elements, such as wind, rain and snow. The hardshell also protects against abrasions. A true hardshell has a 3-layer membrane without a warm inner lining. That's why you always combine a hardshell jacket and pants with thermal base layers and a midlayer.

If you set out in dry weather but it starts snowing en route, you put on your hardshell jacket. Or if you get hot, you take off the midlayer without having to remove your protective outer layer (hardshell). This way you can easily adapt your clothing to the conditions using the three-layer system.
